Description
«After Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony, this is the first symphony worthy of such a name,» the contemporaries said about Myaskovsky’s Sixth after its premiere in Bolshoi theatre on May 4, 1924. This symphony is the first «musical reflection» of the revolutionary era and serves as an authentic document of the historical catastrophe as do the Cursed Days by Ivan Bunin, Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak or the White Guard by Mikhail Bulgakov.
The lecture will focus on several major topics: the birth of the symphony — from concept to its implementation, its literary sources and the possibility of programmatic interpretation, the musical themes and their symbols, the history of performances in Russia and abroad. It will examine one of the most grandiose creations of Nikolai Myaskovsky in a broad historical and artistic context.
