Lingling Yu is the winner of the National Competition of Chinese Traditional Music in Beijing. At the age of 13, she started studying with Liu Dehai at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing; then she studied with Jean Balissat at the Lausanne University of Music, and with Eric Gaudibert and Nicolas Bolens at the University of Music in Geneva. Her teachers were such renowned pipa professors as Jieli Luo, Fandi Wang and Weixi Sun.
Lingling Yu works with orchestras and ensembles of different counties in Europe, Asia and Africa, giving performances at famous concert halls of Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands, Denmark and China. Her concerts have been broadcast by radio stations of most European counties; her mastery has received wide television and radio coverage in China, Switzerland, France, Italy, Tunisia and Morocco; Little Genius, a documentary film, was dedicated to her.
Lingling Yu does research, arrangement and score writing for pipa music of the 10th century; she studies ancient Chinese opera music, traditional Chinese music, and traditional music of other countries. She collaborates with famous contemporary composers who dedicate their compositions to her; she composes Kunqu opera music. Her mission is to promote a dialogue between Chinese and western musical traditions.
