Laureate of prestigious international competitions, including the Walther Gruner International Lieder Competition in London, Placido Domingo Operalia in Madrid, the Belvedere Competition in Vienna. He has performed in Monaco, Berlin, Graz, Lyon, Oslo, Hong Kong, São Paulo, Amsterdam (with the Concertgebouw Orchestra), Tokyo (with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra) and other cities of the world. He took part in the Salzburg and Melbourne festivals, collaborated with renowned conductors such as Sylvain Cambrelin, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Riccardo Chailly, Philip Herreweghe, Ivan Fischer, Roger Norrington, Nikolaus Harnoncourt.
Geert Smiths was born in Helden, The Netherlands, where he studied with Bernard Kruysen and Margreet Honig. From 1998 to 2004, he was a performer of the Vienna State Opera. Among his operatic roles are Il Conte in Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, Silvio in Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly by Puccini, Fernando in Beethoven’s Fidelio, Wolfram in Tannhäuser and Gunther in Götterdämmerung by Wagner. The singer’s discography includes Heine Songs (1996), Das Rheingold (2005), 9.Symphonie Beethoven (2012), Brahms-Mahler-Schumann Songs (2013). Since 2008, he has a full professorship at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg.
