Songs of Love and Death

Description

Two evenings of the Festival will be devoted to the first full performance in Russia of the Messiaen’s Tristan-Triptych: Harawi: Chants d'amour et de mort (Songs of Love and Death) and Cinq rechants (December 3), and Turangalîla-Symphonie (December 6). Messiaen led the tragic story of overmastering love beyond the limits of European culture, turning to Andean traditions in Harawi.

The Songs of Neruda by American composer Peter Liberson have a beautiful but sad story. His wife Lorraine loved pink, and when Peter saw the pink book of Pablo Neruda's sonnets, he bought it for his wife because of... the color of the cover. He read it, fell in love with the rhythm and lyrics of poetry, and put the sonnets on music dedicating it to his beloved wife. They became the swan song for her. In them we hear sadness, love and gentle farewell...
