The International Youth Cultural Center was founded in 2014 at the initiative of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and by the decree of the Government of the Sverdlovsk Region. It merged into the Sverdlovsk Philharmonic. The main objectives of the Center are to develop international cultural relations, to build an environment for creativity, self-actualization, and professional growth of young musicians, to support the international reputation of the Sverdlovsk Region as a leading music center. The Summer Orchestra Academy is a keystone project of the Center. The idea was enthusiastically supported by RCCR Projects GmbH, a partner of the Sverdlovsk Philharmonic, well-known for its initiatives in culture and international cooperation. The Academy welcomes promising musicians from the Ural Youth Symphony Orchestra as well as young performers from Europe, Asia, and Latin America.

The Orchestra Academy conducted training sessions for young artists in Yekaterinburg in 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2018. Workshops, group and orchestra rehearsals were conducted by famous musicians and professors. The signature project of the Summer Academy – the International Youth Tchaikovsky Orchestra – is represented by performers studying at the Academy. The musical band repertoire invariably includes compositions by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, the composer whose artistic legacy takes a prominent place in the world’s culture and whose life was connected with Alapayevsk, a town in the Urals.

The International Youth Tchaikovsky Orchestra concert activities are an integral part of the middle Urals cultural scene. The orchestra has been giving performances in Yekaterinburg and several towns of the Sverdlovsk Region including Alapayevsk, Kamensk-Uralsky, Krasnoturyinsk, and Revda. It was also representing the Summer Orchestra Academy during the Classics over Volga music festival (Tolyatti, Samara Region) and performed on the stage of Konzerthaus Berlin as part of the Young Euro Classic festival (2017).

In 2018, further to the Russian-German year of regional and municipal partnership, the Summer Orchestra Academy was awarded as one of the best interregional cooperation projects. In September 2018 in Berlin, Alexander Kolotursky, Director of the Sverdlovsk Philharmonic, and Tatjana Rexroth, Director of RCCR Projects GmbH, accepted the award from German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and his Russian colleague Sergey Lavrov.

In 2019, a German conductor Peter Rundel has accepted the offer to become the artistic director of the Summer Orchestra Academy. The young musicians will be trained by expert teachers: Wilfried Strehle (viola) and Timur Martynov (trumpet). The international symphonic ensemble will give several concerts in the Ural region. The International Youth Tchaikovsky Orchestra performance on the stage of the Concert Hall of the Sverdlovsk Philharmonic in Yekaterinburg has historically been an integral part of the cultural programme of the Innoprom International Industrial Trade Fair.

The year of 2019 has brought about another significant collaboration of the International Youth Cultural Center of the Sverdlovsk Philharmonic and RCCR Projects GmbH – the Russian-German Musical Academy. In June, prior to the Summer Orchestra Academy in Yekaterinburg, the Ural Youth Symphony Orchestra gave several performances for the German audience in collaboration with the North-West German Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Frank Berman. The combined orchestra of 125 musicians performed the Alpine Symphony by R. Strauss, the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini by S. Rachmaninoff (the piano part was played by Yury Favorin), and also gave the very first German performance of a piece by a contemporary Russian composer O. Viktorova called “In the mountain cave…”. Performances in Herford, Hamm and Paderborn (North Rhine-Westphalia) were sponsored by the cultural fund of Westfalen-Lippe and the Community of Friends of the Russian-German Musical and supported by the international cultural project Russian Seasons Germany.
